Apple Pro Apps
Apple Professional Applications Design
My role: individual contributor, creative director, and hiring manager, Apple Professional Applications
Apple’s award-winning professional applications — including Apple’s ‘FinalCut X’ (video post production) and ‘Logic’ (audio) — are now being used by millions of people, and both their affordability and sophistication is especially important in today’s social media-centric society.
Here is work and information about Apple’s professional video and audio applications that I’ve led and helped design over a decade, done in collaboration with incredibly talented people I’ve gotten to know and enjoy. A few names come to mind without most of this great work would not have been possible: Eddy Cue, Patrick Heynen, Steve Jobs, Brian Frick, Marian and Rachel Goldeen, Robert Kondrk, Oliver Krevet, Charles Migos, Brian Rose, Egan Schulz, Chris Sanders, Mike Stern, Will Stein, Sina Tamaddon, Jean Tsong, Randy Ubillos, Dan Walker, Tim Wasko, Brian Z. and so many more — I wish I could give credit to each and every one, however, that’s simply not possible: thanks to you all.
“Final Cut Pro has democratized professional video editing by bringing the capabilities of a $50,000 editing bay to everyone for under $1,000”, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO when he expressed how much Apple was honored and excited to be receiving their second Emmy Award.
Among the winners (artists) that have been utilizing Apple’s Logic (or GarageBand) to make their albums are Coldplay; Jennifer Hudson; Daft Punk ; Estelle featuring Kanye West; and Radiohead (Macworld 2009).
Steve Jobs led Pixar as its CEO while being CEO of Apple. Pixar is best known for its feature films technologically powered by RenderMan, the company’s own implementation of the industry-standard RenderMan Interface Specification image-rendering application programming interface. Luxo Jr., a character from the studio’s 1986 short film of the same name, is the studio’s mascot. Both Apple and Pixar cross-pollinated many times. The team at Pixar would eventually adopt the dark look and feel of Apple’s ProKit for their own software products, including RenderMan.
While we were busy creating the dark look for Apple’s pro apps, just about the time people were enjoying Monsters, Inc. at the theaters, Apple — with Steve Jobs at the helm — also introduced the iPod. And iTunes. And, eventually, the iPhone, iTouch, iPad, and iCloud. As a driving force in today’s culture, one would be hard-pressed to find an individual (and company) who has had a larger impact on not just one but two, perhaps three, generations and so many industries.
